How to Write a Eulogy for a Funeral

Mangano Family Funeral Homes • October 18, 2021

While there is not technically any right or wrong way to write a eulogy for a lost loved one, there are definitely some tips and suggestions that can help make the process a little easier to navigate. There are also several professional writers you can connect with to get help with content layouts and the like if needed. A eulogy usually portrays an entire lifetime of memories or experiences into just a short window during a service. While it is a great honor to hold the responsibility, it can also be a great challenge to try and say everything you would like to in such a short time. There are several funeral homes in Deer Park, NY that can assist in helping with planning and services for you and your loved ones.

When thinking of writing a eulogy, think about paraphrasing a story or experience, capturing the best parts, and putting those in your writing. There are plenty of online websites to help with ideas, but remember that the quality of your writing is far more important than the length of the message you are delivering. A quality written piece will offer those around you good feelings of sending a loved one-off.

What Exactly is a Eulogy?

In short, a eulogy is really the opportunity to share and remember all of the great experiences and accomplishments of a loved one by highlighting those “best” moments. It paints a positive picture of the deceased. Usually, it’s given by a family member or sometimes a friend. Highlighting the positive impact someone had throughout their lifetime on everyone isn’t easy unless you knew the person very well and were a significant part of their lives.

A Rough Outline

Like writing other important speeches or formal storytelling moments or presentations, using a good outline is a great way to start writing your eulogy. When following an outline, you can simply plug in the different areas with the information you’ve gathered to start forming a nice presentation for when the day comes. Here is an example of what a eulogy outline could look like, but is only one of many possible layouts:

  • Introduction: opening with some basic information that sets the tone, includes names, cause of death, and relationship with the person.
  • The body: This is the most important part and the longest part. This is where you can talk about accomplishments, life events, childhood years, marriage and/or children, and any other fond memories of the person during the lifetime.
  • The ending: Briefly summarize the person and offer a final takeaway, quote, or scripture, then thank everyone for participating in the ceremony.

While this isn’t an exhaustive list of steps, it is a great way to get started with your planning process. Reach out before you start your planning and go into the process confident and prepared.
