William R. Avallone, 83

Middle Island – Mr. William Roger Avallone, born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, passed away on October 30, 2018. Bill, 83, died peacefully with his loving wife of 54 years, Ann Carol, by his side after battling a recent stroke. In addition to being a loyal and devoted husband to Carol, Bill was a loving father to Renee Avallone (Alfredo Molinari) of Whitestone, NY, Michael (Michelle) Avallone of Long Island City and Montauk, NY, and Nicole (John) Hayes of Andover, MA, and cherished grandfather to Mia, Jack, Noah and Mariella, who affectionately called him Pop-Pop. Bill came from a large Italian family and is predeceased by his 12 siblings and his parents, Marie Antoinette and Michael Angelo.

After high school, Bill served his country in the U.S. Army as an infantryman. He then worked as a welder for the New York City Transit Authority for twenty years, tirelessly commuting to NYC from Long Island each day to support his family. Bill loved spending time with his family, especially in his later years at the beach in Montauk and the holidays in Andover, MA. Second only to his family was his beloved baseball team, the NY Mets. Bill proudly sported “Met Nut” on his license plate for the last 25 years. His children’s fondest memories are attached to the many local baseball games they went - or were dragged - to with him. No one was more passionate about baseball than Bill, and he enthusiastically coached his son and the little league.

Bill and Carol lived in Farmingville with their young family but spent the last twenty years living in Birchwood at Spring Lake in Middle Island. Bill enjoyed golfing and founded the community’s Billiard Club. Together they made many wonderful friends that have been very supportive to Carol throughout Bill’s illness.

In his retirement, Billy Blues Eyes started every morning the same way: coffee and breakfast with Carol and the Newsday paper, always starting with the sports page. His genuineness, honesty, kindness and passion for life will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
