Elder Curnetta A. Hemmings-Oakley, a beloved matriarch and dedicated caregiver, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, at the age of 89 in Stony Brook, New York. Born on May 24, 1936, in Jamaica, West Indies, Curnetta would later move to the United States, where she made significant contributions both to her family and the community.
Curnetta’s career as a Home Health Aide at Long Island Nursing and Housekeeping at Pilgram State Psychiatric Center Central Islip, New York, showcased her deep commitment to serving others. Her kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on her family, her church family her colleagues and her community in America and Jamaica.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Valrie and Joan, and her devoted sons, Patrick, Michael (Curline), Phillip (Evadney), Dennis (Nadine), Barrington (Darnell), Garfield/Adolph (Marilyn), Christopher and a host of bonus children she helped to raise. Curnetta was also a proud grandmother to 35 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, who will cherish the memories of their time with her and the love and support she shared with each of them.
Visitation services for Elder Curnetta A. Hemmings-Oakley will be held on January 18, 2026, at Mangano Family Funeral Home of Middle Island, located at 640 Middle Country Rd, Middle Island, NY, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. A prayer service will be conducted the following day, January 19, at Gordon Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church, 21 Teller Ave, Coram, NY, starting at 10:00 AM. Curnetta will be laid to rest in a cemetery ceremony at Washington Memorial Park, 855 Canal Road, Mount Sinai, NY, at 1:30 PM.
Curnetta Oakley will be remembered not only for her hard work but also for her warmth, strength, and the legacy of love she leaves behind. Her family and friends mourn her passing while celebrating a life rich with kindness and compassion.
