Dennis John Bennett, a beloved member of the East Hampton community, passed away on October 25, 2023, at the age of 95. He will be remembered as a man of many talents and an individual who left a lasting legacy. Born on October 10, 1928, in East Hampton, NY, to parents John Dayton Bennett and May Mulchy, Dennis possessed a natural love and appreciation for nature from an early age. This passion led him to pursue a career in landscaping, where he dedicated his life to creating beautiful outdoor spaces that brought joy to countless individuals and families.
After graduating from high school, Dennis embarked on a journey that would shape his life forever. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was ready at any moment to serve his country. His military service, from January 8, 1947 - January 7, 1950 not only instilled in him discipline and courage but also exposed him to different cultures and landscapes that further fueled his love for nature. Dennis served as an airplane mechanic and crew chief, and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was deployed to the Philippines, and told many stories about island life and the local people.
Upon his return in the late 1950's, Dennis worked at General Electric's Schenectady, NY plant as an Electrical Engineer. He returned to East Hampton and started his own landscaping business. He employed a few men and cared for the properties of local customers. Reading was his favorite pastime. He enjoyed watching wildlife in the backyard and the antics of his beloved dog Whitney for 13 years.
His contributions to the community were immeasurable. From designing vibrant public parks to collaborating with local organizations on conservation projects, Dennis actively worked towards creating a greener and more sustainable future for all. His dedication to preserving the environment will continue to inspire generations to come.
Dennis was predeceased by his sister Mary Rose Bennett and brother Thomas William Bennett
Beyond his professional achievements, Dennis was a cherished friend, and is survived by his life partner and pillar of strength throughout his life, Loree Ann Gambino who misses him dearly. Loree Ann stood by his side for 48 years, supporting him throughout his life's journey. Dennis and Loree Ann shared a deep bond that brought immeasurable joy and happiness to both of their lives. Dennis also has a niece, Bridget Anne Bennett in England and a nephew Raymond Thomas Bennett. Several cousins are living in the East Hampton area.
Dennis John Bennett will forever be remembered for his passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment to making the world a more beautiful place. His legacy will live on not only through the gardens he designed but also through the countless lives he touched with his warmth and kindness. Dennis's memory will be forever cherished by the community. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
