With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we remember and honor the remarkable life of Fred P. Gallagher, who passed away on July 10, 2026. Born on January 18, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, Fred’s journey was a tapestry interwoven with love, service, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends.
Answering the call of duty, Fred bravely served his country as a paratrooper during the Korean War. His commitment to service didn’t end with the military; Fred later dedicated his professional life to labor relations for the Town of Babylon, striving always to be a voice for fairness and cooperation. His colleagues and community will remember him as a great collaborator, someone whose steady hand and clear vision left a lasting impression.
Yet, it is within the heart of his family that Fred’s legacy shines brightest. For 67 beautiful years, he shared his life with his beloved wife, Patricia Gallagher. Together they crafted a home brimming with laughter, music, and the kind of memories that linger long after a conversation fades. Fred’s loyalty was legendary; he poured his energy into the roles of husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, approaching each with genuine joy and selfless kindness.
Fred is survived by Patricia, his loving wife and partner. Their union was blessed with children who carry their father’s spirit forward: son Paul and daughter-in-law Leah, daughter Pamela and son-in-law Dan, and son Mark and daughter-in-law Meg. Fred was a proud and cherished grandfather to Daniel, David, Douglas, Brandon, Owen, Emma, Jack, Alyssa and Anthony and a joyful great-grandfather Isla Rose. In all these lives, Fred’s warmth, counsel, and generosity will be a guiding light and source of comfort.
Those who knew Fred describe him as generous, selfless, and loyal—a man whose ready hands and open heart built not just walls and furniture, but bridges between people. He was a true handyman and fixer-upper, always willing to lend his skills for a neighbor or friend. Fred’s home echoed with music; his fingers coaxed cheerful tunes and heartfelt songs from his guitar, his voice often lilting joyfully into yodels that would fill the room and invite shared smiles. Family gatherings found a special kind of magic in these moments, punctuated by his laughter and the deep affection he held for those around him.
Fred’s birthday was cherished in the Town of Babylon, which once honored him by naming a Town after him—just one of many ways his community sought to reflect back a fraction of the love and service he so freely gave.
As we gather to celebrate Fred’s extraordinary life, we invite all who knew and loved him to join us:
