Joseph Ronald Ward, a devoted family man, proud veteran, and cherished friend, passed away on May 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication. Born on February 9, 1941, in Manhattan, New York, Joseph lived a life marked by service, strength, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
Known affectionately by many as “Mighty Joe” and “The Eagle,” Joseph embodied qualities of kindness, hard work, and steadfastness. He earned a high school diploma and served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963. Following his military service, Joseph contributed his skills and talents as an employee of Fairchild Republic in Farmingdale, New York, during the production of the renowned A-10 Thunderbolt II—also known as "The Warthog," a specialized close air support aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards he went on to become an Operating engineer for Local 94.
Joseph’s dedication extended beyond his career. He was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 94, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2, the American Legion, and the Tin Can Sailors. His quiet pride in his military background was exemplified by his selfless volunteer work at Ground Zero search and rescue operations, demonstrating his enduring spirit of service and compassion.
A loving and caring individual, Joseph was known for overcoming many obstacles with grace and strength. He had a deep love for his family, and his stories of family trips to Ireland and his navy days were treasured by all who knew him. Joseph's nature was one of generosity; he supported charities dear to his heart, particularly those related to Autism and military veterans. As a good listener, he offered gifts of acceptance, love, laughter, and a profound sense of family.
Joseph found joy in life's simple pleasures, creating happy memories with his nieces and nephews, teaching them to drive, and hosting lively family barbecues. He treasured spending quality time with his grandchildren—Liam, Liliana, Miadove, Josie, Lucia, and Joshua—treating each as if they were his favorite. He also shared a love for the New York Yankees, rock and roll music, and a deep faith in Jesus Christ.
Throughout his life, Joseph cherished his relationships with his living family members: his son Christopher; daughters Valerie, Denise, and Jennifer; daughter-in-law Denise, son-in-laws Ken and Paul; and his siblings Johnny, Pat, and Irene. His heart was forever intertwined with those who preceded him in death—the late Esther, his beloved wife of 59 years; the late Anne Rene, his daughter; and his late siblings Jerry, Kenny, and Nancy.
After retiring from Local 94 , Joseph fulfilled a long-held dream by moving to Maine, where he enjoyed his beautiful lake house—a private sanctuary and a testament to a life well-lived.

Joe Ward’s life was a profound example of devotion, kindness, and strength. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing “Mighty Joe” and “The Eagle.” May his memory be a blessing and his spirit find eternal peace.
Joe along with his wife Esther raised his children with loyalty, love and devotion. His children carry that legacy into their own lives by becoming business owners, a legendary musical artist as well as being devoted, loving parents and caretakers themselves. His children continue to retain the close-knit bond that has always been Joe's greatest joy in life.
Life will not be the same anymore without Joe, but we are all blessed having known him and may we all keep him in our memories and conversations as a source of comfort and strength and peace and love.
