Born on January 11,1953, in Manhattan, New York, Kathryn lived a life of purpose, dedication and pioneering spirit.
A LIFE OF PURPOSE AND PERSEVERENCE
Kathryn was a graduate of Central Commercial High School in Manhattan, where she majored in Secretarial Studies. A stellar student, she was awarded a Gold Medal for excellence in Gregg Shorthand and was a proud member of the National Honor Society throughout her three years in high school.
Her professional journey began early with part-time roles that showcased her diligence and compassion, including work with the Sloanes Children's Aid Society and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. These experiences honed her skills and set the foundation for a distinguished career in administrative support.
After earning her stripes as the New York Telephone Company - where she was promoted to Division Secretary in just over five years - Kathryn made a bold move to Suffolk County, where her passion for education and her community truly blossomed. Kathryn was proud to serve as EMS Captain of the Gordon Heights Fire Department, and further along in her service of 12 years became a Commissioner for the GHFD.
A HISTORIC FIRST FOR LONGWOOD SCHOOLS
Kathryn made history by becoming the first Black secretary in the Middle Island Central School District, working at the Longwood Schools in Yaphank, NY. Her handwritten testimonial (included in full in the district archives) reflects her deep sense of pride and responsibility: "My present job is Secretary to the Director of Elementary Education... I find the job to be one of great interest. I enjoy my work and will continue to perform my duties with pride and to the very best of my capabilities." She went on to describe her commitment to her new role, her community, and her family: "I feel a sense of responsibility toward the community since I began working here in the district. I hope to remain in the Middle Island School District to advance my career and knowledge and further represent my community." Kathryn's groundbreaking role opened doors and inspired future generations to follow in her footsteps.

She is also mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends, all of whom were touched by her warmth, her intelligence, and her unwavering commitment to doing what was right.
Kathryn will be remembered not only for her professional milestones, but also for her love of family, her grace under pressure, and her enduring presence in the lives of those who knew her. She was a lover of television, a champion bowler, Bingo (a frequent winner of the largest pots), a strategic crusher of candy on her iPad, and dancing. Kathryn found joy in the simplest moments - especially when helping someone in need or simply spending time with family and friends.
