Types of Funeral Home Services

Mangano Family Funeral Homes • October 4, 2021

While some families do get creative with the ceremonies they put together for a loved one, there are typically four or so different standard options when it comes to planning a ceremony or service. The following will discuss some of those options to help you better understand the weight of the decisions that come and put you at ease so that you understand the process from start to finish. There are funeral homes in Ridge, NY that can also help do a great job caring for you and yours, and offer up advice in hard times when planning such an event.

Traditional Funeral Service

This service is one that many are familiar with and usually includes a viewing or a visitation along with the formal funeral service, the transportation of the body to the site and cemetery, and the burial. While this is usually the most expensive option, it offers the most opportunity for family and friends to be involved and pay their respects in a formal setting. Costs also include renting the funeral home, vehicles to transport family, casket, cemetery plot, and any other goods or services.

Contacting a funeral home is the best way to work through the details involved, even once you have taken time to do a little research online.

Have a Memorial Service

While very similar to the traditional funeral in that it offers family and friends a formal time and place to remember a loved one, a memorial service can be held anytime after the death. The most important thing to remember is that it offers a safe place to get together and support one another, tell stories, and remember the positive things about a lost loved one. There is more flexibility with a memorial service and thus costs are often very different.

Direct Burial

The body of a loved one is buried shortly after they pass, often not in a casket, but some other simpler container. There aren’t any formal viewings or visitation set up so the additional costs of embalming are also not relevant. Sometimes families will hold a small service at the graveside or shortly after on another date. There are times where the funeral home will charge extra for a graveside service if the family does decide to be at the cemetery during the burial.

Cremation is Popular

Cremation is becoming more popular simply due to the flexibility in location offerings and savings, as well as a fear in many of claustrophobia from being buried. There is still the option to hold traditional funeral services before a cremation takes place, though that is entirely up to those planning the services. Cremation is quick and gives the family the option to keep the remains or in some cases, scatter the ashes.

Regardless of the decisions you must make, it’s important to know your options for when the time comes.
